Remembering Dad on Father's Day

The nine Everett siblings are preacher's kids.  We were raised in the church.  Dad became a Pastor of his own church, King Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in West Oakland in the 1960's.  Dad moved to Albany New York and handpicked the late Reverend Memphis Jenkins, of the famous Jenkins’ BBQ on 7th Street in West Oakland, to become the new pastor of his beloved King Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.  

I never felt closer to my dad than the night I had to spend my birthday writing his obituary for his home going celebration the next day.  As I looked through hundreds of photos and family histories it was as if I was discovering a man that I had not known.  

His remaining siblings knew him when he was a child and they had stories I had never heard before.   His church family filled in more of the picture with their own stories of the man who had been their Pastor for 35 years.  My siblings shared stories and finally it was left to me to tell the world about my dad.  It was just me and my dad late into the night and it turned out that it was the best birthday present of all.  R.I.P Daddy.
